Uganda/UNDP/UNEP Partnership Initiative for the Implementation of SAICM
Background
Although chemical production in Uganda constitutes less than 2% of the total demand for chemicals, there is high danger of their abuse from those imported. Sound management of chemicals can improve the living environment and work conditions of the poor and thus their health, while at the same time proper use of chemicals such as pesticides and chemical fertilizers can boost crop yields, protect the productivity of freshwater and marine fisheries, and ecosystems on which poor communities depend. Secured livelihoods can help free up time for other activities, such as education. This calls for strengthening of the weak legislation, monitoring capacity and building capacity for the proper compliance with chemicals management regulations.
Development objectives
The objective of this pilot project is to develop strategies for integration of sound management of chemicals into national development plans and programmes through MDG-based planning for enhancement of environmental sustainability.
Key activities & expected results
The project, based upon research, analysis and planning, will qualify the links between major chemical management problem areas, human health and environmental quality in Uganda so as to draw up strategies for which areas of national sound management of chemicals governance regime need support. The proposed strategies will ensure the highest priority of sound management of chemicals issues in Uganda’s development planning processes and plans.
Implementation phase
The project has conducted an expanded Local Project Appraisal Committee meeting, at which the proposal was approved for funding awaiting a DOA.
